Tamil Nadu Government Grants Rs.120 Crore to Adyar Cancer Institute
The Tamil Nadu government has allotted Rs. 120 crore to Adyar Cancer Institute to strengthen its facilities.
Chief Minister Jayalalithaa had recommended to the Central Government that the Institute be declared a center of excellence. The center has allotted Rs . 67.38 crore, recognizing the institute as State Cancer Institute. The rest of the money has been provided by the State government.

Also, the State government has set aside funds to improve treatment facilities for cancer. The government is developing cancer treatment centers at government hospitals in Madurai, Coimbatore, Thanjavur and Tirunelveli.

Authorities say that the cancer marker blood tests are expected to be offered in these specialized cancer treatment centers.

V. Shanta, chairperson, Adyar Cancer Institute, said that, "The grant comes as part of a tripartite agreement between the Central and State governments and the Cancer Institute, with the government of India bearing two-thirds the share, and the State, one third."

Dr. Shanta added that "The Center had sanctioned this earlier and we were just waiting for the State to make the announcement. We have the greatest gratitude to the Tamil Nadu government. Being an NGO, the Union government was not going to consider our application. The Chief Minister recommended our case, which has had a great role in the Center sanctioning this grant."
