KB Medical, a Swiss company, has announced that its AQrate robotic system for assisting surgeons during the spinal surgery has been used in a lumbar fusion procedure at the Neurosurgery Department of Hôpital du Valais in Sion, Switzerland. Lumbar spinal fusion is a surgery that causes the vertebrae in the lower back to grow together. The surgery aims to have the two vertebrae fuse so that there is no longer any motion between them.
The company also said that with a minimally invasive posterior approach procedure, they implanted four clapped screws. And the robot was used to plan the operation. The robot guided the positioning of instruments, and create holes for placing the screws.
Officials with the company said that its technology would improve spinal surgeries by offering high levels of accuracy and lowering exposure to radiation.
