After Manipur recorded its first Swine Flu death recently, a crowd gathered at Imphal East to protest discrimination faced by children of the victim.
After the death of the first Swine Flu victim in Manipur, Geeta, women from her locality are facing discrimination. Even her children are now avoided in school and they’re treated as ’untouchables’. The protest was jointly organized by the Society for Women Empowerment (SWD) and Locality Improvement Committee (LIC).
On the sidelines of the demonstration, SWD president B.Manishangbi alleged that a school-going son of Geeta has been barred from boarding his school van and hence he faced stigma and discrimination.
Manishangbi alleged that some people have also reportedly expressed their fear in passing Brahmapur Bachaspati Lekai, Geeta’s native place in Imphal East.
She called upon the State Government to organize an awareness program on Swine Flu in order to prevent spreading of wrong information about the disease.
