Swine Flu Claims Two More Lives in Mumbai; Death Toll climbs to 33

Two senior citizens succumbed to swine flu in Mumbai on March 17, taking the death toll due to swine flu to 33 in the city since January. A 70-year-old Borivli resident, was admitted to Karuna Hospital on March 11 with  complaints of cough, cold and fever. She was later transferred to Apex Hospital for isolation facility.

She had pre-existing condition of heart disease and diabetes. The woman died due to acute respiratory distress syndrome and septicemia on March 17.

The 72-year-old man from Rajasthan was admitted in Shraddha Hospital, Mulund, on March 15. He was a diabetic and also suffered from hypertension. He died due to cardiorespiratory failure, bilateral pneumonia and septicemia on March 17.

Dr Mangala Gomare, chief of epidemiology, BMC, said, “Even though weather has changed of late, the nights are still significantly cooler than the days. It is difficult to predict as to when the number of cases will start dropping.”

A total of 1,428 swine flu cases reported in Mumbai with the count across Maharashtra crossing 3,500 since January this year.
