Survey Says Fattest People in UK Reside in East Midlands

by Rajshri on Feb 15 2010 6:41 PM

A poll on obesity and weight loss has found that the fattest people in the UK reside in East Midlands and have an average body mass index (BMI) of 28.9. Scotland was next on the list with an average BMI of 28.4, while London had an average BMI of 26.1.

These are the results of a survey by Slimming World and YouGov, which quizzed 2,148 people across the UK eating habits, activity levels and their weight. BMI is calculated by taking a ratio of height and weight. A BMI of above 25 and less than 29.9 means a person is regarded as overweight, while a BMI of over 30 indicates obesity.

Dr Ian Campbell, a GP and obesity expert, said that the high obesity levels in East Midlands predispose the residents there to diseases like diabetes, heart disease and some forms of cancer.

He added that strategies needed to be formulated to tackle obesity on the country.
