Survey Finds Excessive Noise Hurts Preschoolers

A survey by the Deaf Foundation in New Zealand has found that at least one in five preschoolers is being exposed to excessive noise when they play.

The poll involved 65 early childhood centres and found that at least 20% of kids were disturbed by the noise so much so that they either closed their ears or cried loudly. "Often classrooms are poorly designed, or designed for hygiene with an abundance of hard, easy-to-clean surfaces which makes rooms very reverberant and accentuates the problem," said Deaf Foundation spokesman Nigel Murphy.

The association has mooted the idea of noise-level monitoring and suggested that teachers be in a position to gauge the level and eliminate unwanted sounds.
