Surgery Checklist may Help Prevent Injuries

by Rajashri on Aug 27 2009 11:14 PM

A World Health Organisation initiative that aims to decrease mortality rates and complications during surgery has prompted Australia and New Zealand to issue a surgery checklist.

Health Minister Tony Ryall said that the list would ensure that chances of unintentional injury were minimal. "I strongly encourage all clinicians with the support of their managers to adopt the Surgical Safety Checklist in their hospitals," he added.

The Royal Australasian College of Surgeons censor in chief Ian Civil welcomed the list saying, it had "real potential to save lives, reduce operating room errors, and improve patient safety. We want to see it displayed in every operating theatre in every hospital in New Zealand and Australia."

The list has been on trial in Auckland where surgical death rates fell to 0.8% from 1.5%.
