Surge in Suicide Cases in EU During Economic Downturn
The recent global meltdown has caused a surge in suicide rates in the EU and researchers are trying to discern the reasons for the same.

Suicide rates rose steeply in countries facing severe recession.

The impact of economic downturn was felt in both the established and newer EU countries.

"What we're now also seeing is a human crisis. There's likely to be a long tail of human suffering following the downturn. Suicide itself is a relatively rare event, but wherever you see a rise in suicides there is also a rise in failed suicide attempts and in new cases of depression," researchers said.
