Sunbed Operators in NZ Warned About Overstating Health Benefits
A government commission in New Zealand has warned sunbed operators from overstating the health benefits that the customers can get from using sunbeds.
The Commerce Commission revealed that it had contacted over 280 sunbed operators and warned them that they were violating the Fair Trading Act by giving false information regarding the benefits of sunbeds and at the same time underplaying the risks involved.

The commission also said that it had contacted an independent dermatologist into conducting an investigation into the risks and benefits of sunbeds and the dermatologist warned about the increased risk of skin cancer and eye damage that could be caused by using the sunbeds.

“We are giving them information about compliance with the Fair Trading Act and raising the issue publically so that consumers are aware of what experts say can accurately be claimed about sunbed use. We expect the industry to comply with the Fair Trading Act and hope that informed consumers will question the claims the sunbed operators make”, the commission’s general manager competition, Kate Morrison said.
