Suicide Pact at SAI Water Sports Center: Activists Demand Tough Action Against Culprits
The state committee of Kerala Kayikavedi, in a statement, has demanded stringent action against those who played any role in the suicide bid of four athletes at the Sports Authority of India’s (SAI) water sports center at Alappuzha in Kerala, south India.
On May 7, four athletes consumed a poisonous fruit in what appears to have been a suicide pact at the water sports facility.

The organization also added that as a solace to the family of Aparna Ramabhadran, 16, the lone girl who died in the suicide attempt, the State Govt should declare a financial assistance of Rs 25 lakh and also have to provide a government job to the next of kin of Aparna. The athlete from Aryad in Alappuzha had participated in several national level rowing competitions.

Police in Alappuzha said they have recovered a ‘note signed by the four’, which says they were committing suicide after being ‘scolded’ by their seniors for a ‘silly fault.’

A relative of Aparna alleged that the athletes committed suicide after they were “tortured” by their coaches, but the charge was denied by SAI . SAI Kerala Regional Director G. Kishore said the allegations of the relatives would be investigated.

In New Delhi, Union Sports Minister Sarbananda Sonowal asked SAI Director-General Injeti Srinivas to submit a report on the suicide at the earliest.

Mr. Sonowal termed the death of the athlete as a big loss to the country. In a statement from New Delhi, he said: “I am deeply aggrieved by the incident. The young girl who has died was a very promising sportsperson. It is a big loss to the country, in general, and the SAI and the sports fraternity in particular. I convey my condolences to the bereaved family. We will give all possible help to the bereaved family. At this stage, I would only like to say that if anyone from the SAI is found guilty in connection with this incident, the strictest possible action will be taken against him or her.”
