Substance Abuse Among Girls Linked With the Proportion of Male Friends

Girls who tend to have male friends at an early stage in life are more likely to develop substance abuse later in adolescence. However this did not hold true in the case of boys. This research has been conducted by the University du Quebec Montreal.

Scientists studied about 400 adolescents aged 12-18 years. Researchers found that while boys received greater emotional support from their other sex friends, girls felt supported from their same-sex friends. Since boys get emotional support from female friends they are less likely of getting engaged in antisocial behavior. Among girls antisocial behavior and pubertal maturity increased in proportion of their male friends. The authors of the study are encouraging the parents to closely monitor their daughter's friendships during adolescence, particularly with older boys.
