Study Says Atkins Type of Diets may Harm Arteries
Researchers at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center at Harvard University have said that following diets that mirror Atkins one clog up arteries and increase risk of heart disease.

The researchers analyzed the effects of two different diets on mice in the laboratory. One group of mice were on a diet that consisted of 43 per cent carbohydrate, 42 per cent fat and 15 per cent protein, while another group of mice were put on a diet of 12 per cent carbohydrate, 43 per cent fat and 45 per cent protein.

The study found that mice on low carb diet had double the clogging of arteries as mice on normal diet at 6 and 12 weeks respectively.

"Our research suggests that, at least in animals, these diets could be having adverse cardiovascular effects that are not reflected in simple serum markers," said Professor Anthony Rosenzweig, Director of Cardiovascular Research at BIDMC. "This issue is particularly important given the growing epidemic of obesity and its adverse consequences. For now, it appears that a moderate and balanced diet, coupled with regular exercise, is probably best for most people."

The studyis published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
