The practice of wearing socks over shoes may seem weird at fist, but a new study proves that it is actually very useful. Researchers at the Otago University's department of preventative and social medicine undertook a study to find out if this practice had any use or was it just a fad among consumers.
The researchers recruited participants from Dunedin streets for this study. Some participants were let off, while others were given a pair of thick wool, acrylic blend socks to wear over their shoes.

The researchers report that those wearing socks over their shoes were able to navigate the slippery footpath in a better manner. Dr Lianne Parkin who headed the research, also said they were able to maintain good balance and rarely held onto cars as they walked the streets.
