Study Finds 'Over-protective' Brit Parents Don't Allow Kids to Play Outside

Many parents in Britain are denying their children the experience of outdoor adventures and exercise they benefited from when they were young, a new study has revealed. This can seriously harm the physical and mental growth of children.

Less than a quarter of the kids are allowed out to play today, the survey revealed.

Games like hide and seek, hill-rolling and climbing trees are banned by a number of parents.

Ten per cent of under-10s are never permitted to play outside.

While a quarter of parents enjoyed after-school activities such as riding a bike, nearly a third of today's children spend their free time watching TV or playing computer games, the Daily Express reported.

Merely 14 per cent play sports and just one in 10 cycles regularly, the survey for Persil found.

Experts have warned that the parents' over-protective attitude could have consequences for their children's development.

Dr Lisa Ackerley, a mother of three and environmental health and safety consultant, asserted that the children's social skills could suffer and they could grow up with fewer friends.

"Given the fears that parents have today, there is a real risk that they will pass these fears on to their children, resulting in a generation of fragile, nervous needy adults who may be less equipped to face the pressure of daily life," she said.
