Soy Milk Recalled in Oz

by Rajshri on Dec 24 2009 9:25 PM

Australia’s food safety agency has recalled a Japanese soy milk product and has issued a warning for the general public not to consume it since it carries high amount of iodine.

The step was taken after 10 people, including a baby, in the New South Wales region complained of thyroid problems after consuming the product. Manufactured by Spiral Foods, the Bonsoy milk product is imported from Japan and contains a seaweed product known as Kombu.

While the recommended level of iodine for an adult is 1,100 micrograms per day, consuming just a small cup of the product will provide more than 7,500 micrograms of iodine.

West Australian Health Department’s Chief Health Officer Tarun Weeramanthri urged the public to avoid drinking the product, adding “If you are soy milk drinkers or have soy milk in your household please before Christmas go check your pantry and if there is soy milk in it dispose of it.”
