South Korea Bans Corporal Punishment in Seoul Schools

Schools in Seoul impose ban on corporal punishment with effect from Monday, despite complaints from teachers that such move would encourage indiscipline among students.

The decision affects both public and private schools, a spokesman for the Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education told AFP. Office chief Kwak No-Hyun pushed to put the ban in place after taking over in July.

Centre Urges States to Prohibit Corporal Punishment in Schools
The central government has written letters to all state governments to prohibit corporal punishment in all schools under their jurisdiction.

Many teachers have argued they lack other ways of controlling misbehaviour and say corporal punishment was widely considered effective in Korean schools until recently, the JoongAng Daily reported.

The Seoul education office last month announced guidelines under which teachers can isolate naughty students in an "introspection room" and set up a meeting with their parents.

But teachers affiliated with the Korean Federation of Teachers? Association have described this idea as too idealistic.
