Solihull Hospital in the West Midlands Re-evaluates 500 Breast Cancer Patients
Solihull Hospital in the West Midlands has begun re-evaluating mastectomies done on more than 500 breast cancer patients after they found that the surgeon was trying a new unproven technique to evaluate the mastectomies.

The hospital has managed to get in touch with 500 women who had received treatment from one of the hospital's experienced surgeons, Ian Paterson. A review of breast surgeries had revealed that Mr.Paterson had employed a completely different technique.

"An external review highlighted that this was not a usual procedure and that Mr. Paterson had not followed guidelines to introduce a new technique. Some of the women, not all of them, he treated thought they had a full mastectomy but in fact they have tissue remaining. He is being investigated and has been excluded from working at the hospital."
