Pistachios support weight management and are a wise snack.
Pistachios are one of the lowest calorie nuts with 160 calories per 30 gm
serving (approximately 1 ounce). Also pistachios are cardio-supportive when 1.5
and 3 ounces of pistachios was included in the diet. Pistachios support weight
management and are a wise snack. They
are a good source of proteins and fiber. Snacking on pistachios supports the body
mass index (BMI) goals and also supports heart health, according to researchers
at the University of California - Los Angeles.
The fat found in pistachios does not get completely
absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract, which indicates that pistachios
might actually contain fewer calories per serving than previously thought. This
research was conducted by the Agricultural Research Service (ARS) of the United
States Department of Agriculture (USDA). 16 healthy adults were part of the
study. They were given one 30gm serving of pistachios. The energy value from
differences in energy excretion during the dietary treatment timeframe was
calculated which showed that the energy value of one 30gm serving was 5.9% less
than previous calculations.
The study has been presented at the Experimental Biology
conference in Washington, D.C.
