Smoking “Spice” Linked to Increased Stroke Risk
A new study conducted by researchers at University of South Florida suggests that people who smoke ‘spice’ or synthetic marijuana have an increased risk of stroke.
Researchers led by W Scott Burgin studied the effect of marijuana in two healthy, young siblings who had experienced ischemic strokes soon after smoking spice or K2, a form of synthetic marijuana that is sold on the streets.

The researchers conducted a number of examinations on the siblings to find whether there were any genetic reasons that had predisposed them to strokes at such a young age but were unable to find any. The study has been published in the journal Neurology.

“Since the two patients were siblings, we wondered whether they might have any undiagnosed genetic conditions that predisposed them to strokes at a young age. We rigorously looked for those and didn't come up with anything. To the best of our knowledge, what appeared to be heart-derived strokes occurred in two people with otherwise healthy hearts”, Burgin said.
