Smokers Have Lower IQ Than Non-smokers

by Rajshri on Feb 25 2010 9:14 PM

A study of over 20,000 Israeli military recruits has found that cigarette smokers have lower IQs than non-smokers. All participants were 18-years-old and were fresh recruits into the Israeli military.

Dr. Mark Weiser and colleagues from Sheba Medical Center in Tel Hashomer report that among them smokers had 7.5 points less IQ than non-smokers. In the study, 68% of the participants had never smoked, while 28% smoked at least 1 cigarette a day.

IQ scores for non-smokers were 101 at an average, while it was 94 for smokers. "Adolescents with poorer IQ scores might be targeted for programs designed to prevent smoking," the researchers write.

The details appear in the journal Addiction.
