Smartphone App Tracks ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder)
ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) symptoms & behavior in people with neurodevelopmental conditions can be tracked using a smartphone app as per scientists at the University Of California - Davis Health.
ADHD is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by abnormal levels of hyperactive and impulsive behaviors. Generally, there are no diagnostic tests for ADHD or similar neurodevelopmental conditions. Hence, the diagnosis relies upon the patient's medical history and scaling methods.

The present study tests whether a smartphone-based app (iBehavior) may help improve the accuracy of data through ecological momentary assessment in clinical trials involving individuals with intellectual disabilities.

“It’s a really smart use of a ubiquitous technology and it could make a huge difference in the accuracy of measurement in clinical trials,” says Hessl, a professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences.

The app would send a periodic text for observing the child or young adult’s behavior for around two hours. This will prompt the parents or teachers to record the daily information about aggression and irritability, hyperactivity and impulsivity, attention problems, anxiety-related behavior and avoidance, and more.

Moreover, the study will also include a clinical trial of stimulant medication (a common treatment for ADHD) in 2023. This will help assess the efficacy of the medication in the hope to validate the use of the app as an outcome measure for clinical trials.

The study thereby forms a great leap in the diagnosis of several intellectual disabilities including ADHD through daily behaviors of the patients rather than conventional challenges of remembering the events with detail.
