Amoeboid yellow slime mould can navigate a maze to a source of food. This could provide the key to designing bio-computers, whose information-processing system will be quite close to that of the human brain and is capable of solving complex problems, according to researchers at Future University Hakodate. The Japanese scientists noted that humans are not the only living things with information-processing abilities and this brainless primeval organism is capable of organizing its cells to create the most direct root through a maze to a source of food.
Professor Toshiyuki Nakagaki said, "The cells appear to have a kind of information-processing ability that allows them to optimise the route along which the mould grows to reach food while avoiding stresses, like light, that may damage them."
