Shoe Shiner at Children’s Hospital Donates 200k to Help Treat Sick Kids

A man who has been brushing the shoes at a children’s hospital for more than three decades has donated more than $200,000 that he received in tips to help treat sick children. Albert Lexie started shining shoes at the Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh since 1982, using the same shoeshine box that he had built back in the 1950s. Lexie had a salary of $10,000 per year and used to get tips for people who shined their shoes with majority of the tips being $1 while some gave $2.

Lexie revealed that a doctor had once given him $50 for Christmas but all of the tips, along with a third of his lifetime salary, went to Free Care Fund, which provides financial assistance to ensure that any child who requires treatment gets it regardless of the family’s ability to pay.

Dr Joseph Carcillo said that Lexie’s love for children was the reason behind his gesture. “I think he does it because he loves the kids. He has donated over a third of his lifetime salary to the Children's Hospital Free Care Fund. He's a philanthropist, is what he is. He's an entrepreneur”, Dr Carcillo said.
