Shocking News of Fatal Bullying—Ragged Medico Dies of Serious Injuries

by Thilaka Ravi on Mar 11 2009 4:55 PM

In a shocking revelation of ragging that assumed barbaric proportions in Rajendra Prasad Medical College, Himachal Pradesh in India, 19-year-old Aman Kachroo died of serious injuries after he was allegedly beaten up by drunken senior medical students. According to the police, the autopsy report has cited head injury as the main cause of death.

Aman Kachroo, who hailed from Gurgaon in the outskirts of Delhi and stayed in the medical college hostel was reportedly slapped, punched and kicked on the head by his seniors who also shaved off his head when they were drunk. College sources say he was slapped a number of times by seniors and that led to the rupture of his ear drum, internal bleeding and fatal blood clotting.

All the four senior students of the medical college students accused of ragging first- year student Aman Kachroo to death, surrendered in a local court in Dharamsala and were subsequently arrested and charged with culpable homicide, police said Wednesday.

According to fellow students, the harassment of Aman was going on for a long time and Aman was singled out for severe ragging for his entry into the medical college through the Kashmiri immigrants’ quota.

It has now emerged that Aman had reported the ragging torture to his college authorities and had even named the accused students, but they did not heed his complaints.

Aman’s father Rajender Satya Kachroo, a visiting faculty at the Dar es Salaam University in Tanzania said when his son complained of frequent ragging in college he didn’t think it would be this serious. “I want justice for my son. If we can stop it happening to other parents, it will be a real tribute to Aman,” said the father. “Perhaps that was the purpose of Aman’s life,” he added.

The Himachal Pradesh government has ordered a magisterial probe into the incident, the Principal of the College Suresh Sankhyan has resigned and the warden and the hostel manager have been suspended.

In May 2007, the Supreme Court of India ordered all institutions to implement many of the recommendations made by the government-appointed Raghavan Committee and said ragging “must be deterred by exemplary and harsh punishment.”
