Illegal felling of a tree in Shimla could land you in jail for up to three years if a proposed forest conservation law gets implemented in this hill station.
Official sources said fines of up to Rs.60,000 could also be imposed under a Forest Protection Act that awaits the government nod.The act has been drafted for Shimla by the forest department as the gradual depletion of green cover in the town has caused them worries.
A less cumbersome provision has been made to cut down trees threatening residential houses but only after a team of officials is convinced of the danger.
