The first-ever hospital for children in the Northeast was recently inaugurated in Meghalaya's capital city Shillong, and it will provide state of the art health care facilities.

An initiative of the city's reputed pediatrician, Dr. Debashish Das and his wife Dr. C Kharbudnah, the 30-bedded hospital is spread over one acre area with a built-up space of 20,000 square feet, and aims to provide top quality medical service for children.

The three-storeyed hospital was constructed at the cost of Rs. three crores and was financed by the State Bank of India.

"Being a pediatrician, I've been looking only after children. I felt the need to make something very exclusive for children where they will not only be treated but when they come, they feel as if they are not visiting a hospital but they feel as if it is their home. They don't feel scared of the injection, the environment, they feel happy to see that this is not a hospital where one will get scared of injection," Das said.

The spacious and hygienic hospital has an operation theatre, well-equipped laboratory, ultrasound facilities and other medical equipments necessary for pediatric care.

"I feel this hospital is better and it looks beautiful. The expenditure is also affordable as compared to other places. This is my first time here," a patient's mother said.
