Sharp Rise in Number of Lesbians Seeking IVF Treatment
New figures released by an independent regulatory in Britain has revealed that the number of lesbians opting for IVF treatment has almost doubled in 2009 following the new law making it possible for single/same sex parents to sign up for the fertility treatment.
Previous law stated the child’s need for a father which meant that it was difficult for lesbians, or single women, to fulfill their maternal instinct by opting for IVF. However with the law now relaxed, the number of lesbians signing up for IVF has shot up from 176 in 2007 to 350 in 2009 while the number of single mothers rose from 347 to 1,070 during the same period.

According to the figures released by Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority, successful IVF treatment over the last three years accounted for 358 children among lesbians while the number was 660 among single mothers.

Meanwhile the number of lesbians opting for donor insemination at registered clinics in the last three years has remained around an annual rate of 300 while the agency said that many preferred the method outside registered clinics or at foreign clinics.
