Sex Toys are Hazardous, MP Says

by Rajshri on Dec 21 2009 9:08 PM

Liberal health critic Dr. Carolyn Bennett has said that sex toys are hazardous and that measures must be taken to regulate this industry.

These toys use chemicals like bisphenol A and phthalates, which have been banned from baby teethers and bottle nipples. Dr Bennet has taken up this matter wholeheartedly. "Canada proposed a ban on phthalates in all children's toys," Bennett wrote. "However, they are still found in many sex toys and because they can be sold as novelties, they aren't subject to regulation or testing,"

Amy and Kim Sedgwick, who own the Red Tent Sisters sex shop are keen to clean up this industry. "The sex toy industry is unregulated. They are considered novelties, so they are not intended to be used, but they are," said Kim, who has a bachelor's degree in gender studies from King's College.

Amy agreed saying that these chemicals may cause breast cancer and infertility issues and need to be regulated.
