Sex Education Syllabus to Be Revised by NCERT

by Savitha C Muppala on Jul 31 2008 7:34 PM

National Council for Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has decided to make positive changes to the sex education syllabus after the discovery of objectionable content and graphics in the sex education text books.

Seven states in India had raised objections to the sex education syllabus; the graphic and content was found to be inappropriate.

The content will be revamped keeping the focus on ‘abstinence’ rather than the use of protection,  the prevailing content in the text. The revised content will seek to stress on prevention as the key message to youngsters in their fight against HIV and sexually transmitted infections. The syllabus will be revised to suit people from different cultural backgrounds and from urban and rural areas.

The final draft of the proposed changes is sated to be ready by end of October.
