Seniors Over 80 Dependent on Children in Delhi
A vast majority of the elderly above 80 years of age living in New Delhi are completely dependent on their children, a new survey reveals.
The Economic & Health Survey on India’s Oldest Old (80 +), conducted by Help Age India, reveals that more than 90 percent of those above 80 years of age in the national capital are dependent on their children with nearly a quarter of them having no source of financial income.

The survey questioned nearly 850 elderly men and women living in the eight major cities of the country and found that almost 80 percent have no free health treatment while nearly two third complained about the health care facility available in the country.

Says Prakash Borgaonkar, co-director of HelpAge India, “Most of the 80-plus population is financially dependent on their children or other relatives. They do not have insurance. This dependency is a limitation in their healthcare treatment.”
