While organ donation is often thought as a noble cause, around 10 percent of Scots believe that doctors will not save a critical patient if they are on the donor’s list.
The study, conducted by Scottish government’s Spare Clare campaign, also found that more than 14 percent believe that the doctors will not check whether the patient is dead or alive before removing the organ.

Jamie Stone, the Liberal Democrat public health spokesman, said that the awareness campaign should also reassure the citizens of the donation process. “This survey reveals an alarming lack of understanding of how organ donation works and a surprising distrust of our doctors. The awareness campaign needs to include reassurances about the donation process. It would be tragic if people were put off signing the donor register by these myths”, Stone said.
