Scientists Find Switch to Reverse Biological Clock

by Rajashri on Oct 1 2009 8:54 PM

Researchers from the University of California at Berkeley have stumbled upon a chemical ‘switch’ that can reverse the "biological clock."

The researchers tested sampled from 30 healthy men; among whom 15 were aged between 21-24 years and the rest were aged between 68 and 74 years.

The researchers removed tissue from the thigh of the participants and put one of their legs into a cast to immobilize it. Later the men did weight training.

The researchers found that in younger men there were four times more regenerative stem cells engaged in tissue repair than those of older men during the exercise period.

"The old muscle didn’t recover as well with exercise. This emphasises the importance of older populations staying active because the evidence is that for their muscle, long periods of disuse may irrevocably worsen the stem cells’ regenerative environment," Dr Morgan Carlson, a member of the Berkeley research team told The Daily Express.
