School Ban on Soda Did Not Lower Overall Consumption
A new US study has found that banning soda in schools did not have much impact on the kids overall consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages (SSB).
Researchers at the University of Illinois at Chicago studied 6,900 students at public schools in 40 states to see whether school bans made a difference in cutting the amount of pop students drank. About 85% of students reported having at least one soda or other sugar sweetened drink in the prior week and 26-33% of students reported daily consumption. This shows that the ban on SSB reduced the access and purchase of these drinks only in the school but did not help to cut down the overall consumption.

The results of the survey are published online in the 'Archives of Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine'.
