Safety Culture in Schools Damaging Children's Development

A survey by Teachers TV finds that many teachers believe the health and safety culture in the schools is hampering the development of kids.

The channel surveyed 585 viewers and found that many believe health and safety precautions to be too restrictive. Some 45% think so, while another 45% felt health and safety regulations were needed.

"The more extreme examples [of health and safety] are thankfully not the norm but schools still need to take into consideration the workforce's concerns when trying to protect pupils," said Andrew Bethell, the Chief executive of Teachers TV.

Over half of those surveyed said hey had had to deal with child abuse, while 40% expressed fear on being alone with a child lest they be accused of inappropriate behaviour.

The Health and Safety Executive said the survey parameters were ridiculous, "Stop worrying about the 'conkers stories' and help children learn how to handle risk by doing things and going on visits," said HSE chair Judith Hackitt.
