Rough Patch for Tiruvarur Medical College

by Savitha C Muppala on Jun 7 2008 2:51 PM

The proposed makeshift medical college in Tiruvarur, scheduled to begin admission during this academic year has entered a rough patch, following the detection of anomalies by MCI authorities during an inspection of the site.

Construction had not yet begun on the site, though the announcement about the 100 crore budget medical college was made in 2007 by the Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi.

The government had set aside funds to the tune of Rs 45 crore as an initial investment for the project. It was also decided that classes would begin during this academic year in makeshift classrooms. Following this decision, the MCI was asked to inspect the facility.

The inspection conducted in May of the makeshift buildings was found to be unsatisfactory. The MCI also found that no progress was made apart from the appointment of a dean and changes to the name of the institution. Though time was given to rectify the anomalies, nothing was done to prove things were moving in a positive direction.

Following the results of the inspection, the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has decided to withhold the permission to Tiruvarur Medical College to admit medical students for this academic year.
