French researchers have found that the risk factors for developing Alzheimer's disease are dependent on the gender of a person. For example depressed women and men who have suffered a stroke are at the highest risk of developing this form of dementia.
The study involved 7,000 people over the age of 65 in the French cities of Bordeaux, Dijon and Montpellier. At the start of the study some 40 percent of the participants had mild cognitive impairment, but none of them had dementia.The researchers assessed the patients at an interval of two years and four years and found that men who had suffered a stroke were three times more likely to suffer from dementia as compared to men who did not have a stroke.
Additionally women with depression were twice as likely to develop dementia id they had mild cognitive impairment as compared to women who did not suffer from depression.
The details of the study are published online in the Journal of Neurology Neurosurgery & Psychiatry.
