Revenge Sex is Real Phenomenon: Study
To get over the agony and pain of a breakup, people will probably have sex with another person, says a study conducted at University of Missouri.
Another point that has come to light is that people also have sex to take revenge from their former partner.

University of Missouri psychologist Lynne Cooper and master’s student Lindsay Barber said rebound sex is a real phenomenon. Cooper said, “People really do use sex as a way to… get back at their ex-partner in the aftermath of a breakup.”

She further added that revenge sex and rebound sex are mostly adopted by those partners who have been abandoned rather than those who did the dumping. Sex helps them vent out their anger, come out of distress and calm down in order to move forward in life.

The survey picked up 170 undergraduate students. Their online diaries of sexual experience turned popular belief into reality as they showed that one-third of them who had recently split went ahead with rebound sex within a month of the breakup.

As per the results of the study, 35 per cent of participants said they had sex to get over their ex-partner and for 25 per cent it was a form of revenge.

Another important point that came to the fore through the study was that the frequency of having sex with another person to lessen the sorrow reduced with the passage of time. The probability to have sex with a new partner also decreased gradually, it said.

The study, which was published in journal Archives of Sexual Behavior, concluded, “People are more likely to have sex for a variety of maladaptive reasons in the aftermath of a romantic relationship breakup especially if they were “dumped” or were in a highly committed or long-standing relationship.”
