Drinking during pregnancy is fraught with risks. The risk of giving birth to a premature baby is three times more in women who drink during pregnancy. Further, babies born to women who have consumed alcohol during pregnancy can also be underweight.
The risk of dying soon after birth is pronounced in babies born to mothers who drink during pregnancy.
The Trinity College Dublin researchers said: ‘Further research is required specifically addressing the effects of low alcohol intake in pregnancy before it can be considered safe.’
The National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence has cautioned women against intake of alcohol in the first three months of pregnancy. Infact, women would do themselves and their babies a world of good if they abstained from alcohol completely during their pregnancy.
