Researchers are Working on Developing Biodegradable Implants to Treat Bone Fractures

Researchers from University of the Basque Country are working on developing biodegradable implants made from plastic polymers and bioglass to treat severely fractured bones.

Currently metal implants are used to help bone regeneration in fractures. Usually a second operation is required to remove the implants once the bones are repaired.

Osteochondritis dissecans is a relatively rare condition. It is an important cause of joint pain in physically active adolescents.

The biodegradable implants eliminate the need for second operation, as the designed implants would gradually degrade into non-toxic products once the bones repair and occupy its place.

“These composites that have a biodegradable polymer base are candidates with a bright future in mending broken bones or in regenerating bone defects,” said researcher, Jose Ramon Sarasua.

However, the thermal properties and mechanical stability of the product remains to be tested.
