Repetition Improves the Vocabulary Skills Among Children

Repetition is more likely to help children improve their reading skills, say researchers at Sussex University. Although parents may find this boring but it has been proved that reading out the same book to children is the best way to develop their vocabulary skills. The researchers devised an experiment wherein children aged 3years were exposed to two new words. One group of children was read out three different stories in the week, while another group was read out the same story with the new words over and over again. At the end of the week it was found that children who were read out the same story were better at recalling the two new words.

Dr. Jessica Horst, who was part of the study said, "What we think is happening with reading is that each time a child hears the book, they are picking up new information. We know that children who watch the same television program over and over again do better in comprehension tests afterwards." Finally the scientists have summarized that it is not the number of books that one reads but it is the repetition of each book which helps children learn better.
