Removing Cancerous Eye Linked to Better Survival Among Kids

Opting to completely remove the eye through surgery when suffering from advanced eye cancer will be more beneficial than chemotherapy, a new report published in the Journal of Clinical Oncology reveals.

The research was conducted by The Hospital for Sick Children, Princess Margaret Hospital and Beijing Tongren Hospital in China. More than 100 children with an average age of 18 months were included in the study with all of the children suffering from retinoblastoma.

The researchers surgically removed 100 eyes soon after diagnosis was made and none of the babies lost their lives compared to 17 percent death rate among babies who had to wait for three months for the surgery in order to undergo chemotherapy.

"Not only is chemotherapy overused around the world, it's harms the children. When chemotherapy is given into the artery which feeds the eyes, it may shrink the tumour in the eye, but you don't see the microscopic cancer cells spreading and growing inside the brain, or other parts of the body", lead researcher Dr Brenda Gallie said.
