A study conducted by a Michigan State University researcher has brought to light the benefits of an ancient technique, reflexology, which involves a type of foot massage that can bring great relief to some of the painful symptoms in cancer patients. The study involved 385 women undergoing chemotherapy or hormonal therapy for advanced-stage breast cancer. Some members of this group received treatment from a certified reflexologist, while others received only standard medical treatment and no foot massage. The results were recorded after 5 weeks and 11 weeks of this treatment.
The study results showed that those in the reflexology group experienced markedly less shortness of breath. They experienced reduced fatigue and were able to carry on with their daily tasks.
“We didn’t get the change we might have expected with the emotional symptoms like anxiety and depression. The most significant changes were documented with the physical symptoms,” researchers said.
