Rare Ear Surgery Performed on Dubai Boy
In a first of its kind surgery in Tamil Nadu, doctors have performed the Nuclear 5 cochlear implant on a two and half year old boy from Dubai.
The surgery was performed on Friday at the KKR ENT Hospital in Chennai. Dr Ravi Ramalingam, who led the team of doctors during the surgery that lasted 90 minutes said, "The Nucleus 5 implant is 30 per cent thinner and 2 per cent stronger than any other implant available today. This implant will mimic natural hearing and looks aesthetic. All the cochlear implants are imported from abroad.”

He added that the implant for the current surgical procedure was imported from Australia. The surgery for implantation was undertaken at a cost of Rs 9.9 lakh.

Research from KKR ENT hospital and the World Health Organization has revealed that three out of every thousand newborns in India suffer from severe degree of impaired hearing. This will require cochlear implantation, but the procedure is not so popular due to the high costs involved.
