Putrid Smell Might Help Identify Men Who Have Gonorrhea
Russian researchers have come up with a new study which suggests that a high percent of men who have unpleasant smell may be suffering from gonorrhea.
According to the study published in the Journal of Sexual Medicine, females may be able to smell out the disease with researchers saying that majority of men with gonorrhea had “putrid smell” according to the females.

The study was conducted by researchers at Institute of Cytology and Genetics in Novosibirsk who collected saliva and armpit samples from 34 men, aged between 17 and 25 years, 13 of whom had gonorrhea while five had recovered from the disease after obtaining medical treatment.

The samples were then assessed by a group of female volunteers, all of whom were between 17 and 20 years of age. The researchers found that the female volunteers described the samples from infected men to be more unpleasant compared to the samples from healthy ones with majority of the infected samples being described as having a putrid or rotten smell.

“Perhaps, the immune-dependent reduction of the scent pleasantness in the acute phase of STI is part of an evolutionary mechanism ensuring, unconsciously, avoidance of a risky romantic partner”, the researchers wrote in their report.
