The Australian Psychological Society (APS) has urged federal parliamentarians to change the law to permit same-sex marriage on the grounds of mental health and well-being.Evidence shows that marriage is beneficial for an individual's mental health and that harm is caused by social exclusion and discrimination. Therefore, the APS which comprises of 20,000 psychologists urged a change in the Marriage Act.
Both in the US and Australia, most gay and lesbian families are not considered in legal decisions. While, most gay and lesbian families are fighting to be recognized as married couples, as families with children, and as voices in the government.
Research by the APS has shown that marriage leads to more well-adjusted citizens with a sense of belonging to their country. Being included in legal decisions as a country, families can feel as though their thoughts matter in the decision making process.
However, the Australian government has not yet reached a decision in terms of legalizing gay marriage at the national level.
