Prof. Swaminathan Says Organic Farming Will Usher in Ever-Green Revolution

Agriculture scientist and Rajya Sabha MP, Prof. MS Swaminathan has said 'organic farming' will usher in the ever-green revolution in the country. Prof. Swaminathan, who was speaking at Khalsa College Amritsar (KCA) said that environment issues confronting the sector were serious but adopting the organic and controlled-fertilizers use would end the woes.

He stressed that focus cannot be just on agriculture growth, but we must ensure the economic growth of the framing community also.

Former head of National Commission on Farmers and Indian Council of Agriculture Research (ICAR), Prof. Swaminathan, also appealed the younger generation to adopt agriculture as avocation.

"We must have young farmers, males and females. We must adopt to the new technology," he said.

Khalsa College Governing Council (KCGC) Honourary Secretary Rajinder Mohan Singh Chhina, Finance Secretary Gunbir Singh and Officiating Principal Dr. JS Bal earlier welcomed Prof. Swaminathan on his arrival here.

Prof. Swaminathan, who was accompanied by Punjab Farmers Commission head Dr. GS Kalkat and Agriculture Scientist Dr. VP Singh, when asked about Punjab's declining agriculture growth said the production is up in Punjab, but the economics are wary.

"There are environmental, marketing issues confronting Punjab's agriculture today. There are issues of farmers' debts and need for diversification and crop rotation," he said, and added that more and more farmers must adopt to the organic farming and the government must help the farming community to get rid of these issues.

Prof. Swaminathan, however, said that Punjab had been and would always be the leader in grain production and the hard working farmers from here have ensured food security of the country.

Dr. Kalkat stated cultural and behavioural challenges confronting farmers are also impending. He said the farmers taking loans to dig tube wells and buying machinery that may not give returns adequately had added to the problems.

Dr. Kalkat said the focus had always been on agriculture, but the time has come when we should emphasis on economic well-being of the farmers also.

Chhina said that they were delighted to have the top most agriculture scientists at the college and their valuable speeches have enriched the faculty and students immensely through the specialized information.
