Premature Babies Have Increased Risk of Mental Disorders

A new study to be published in the Archives of General Psychiatry has found that babies who are born prematurely have an increased risk of suffering from mental disorders including depression, psychosis and bipolar disorder.

The study was conducted by a team of British and Swedish researchers who analyzed medical records of more than 1.3 million Swedes born between 1973 and 1985 and found that those who were born following less than 32 weeks of gestation period were three times more likely to be hospitalized with some mental illness when they are 16 years or older compared to those born on term.
