Pregnant Woman Died After Trainee Surgeons Removed Ovary Instead of Appendix
An inquest has heard that 32-year-old Maria De Jesus in 2011 died after trainee surgeons removed her ovary instead of the appendix to treat her appendicitis.
Maria was discharged 8 days after this botched surgery, but then came back to the hospital complaining of stomach pains. The pregnant mother-of-three miscarried two days later.

She finally underwent the appendix operation 19 days later, but by then it was too little, too late. “My wife’s death could have been prevented, I am sure of it. By the time they realized how serious the situation was, and they promised us all the best consultants, it was too late,” her husband Adelino De Jesus old the inquest.

Barking, Havering and Redbridge Hospitals Trust has accepted that her death could have been prevented and has tendered an apology to her family.

Coroner Chinyere Inyama recorded a narrative verdict and said Maria's death could have been prevented had the window of opportunity to save her been utilized properly.
