Individuals are more likely to accomplish personal goals when they make their personal commitment public. Research at the University of California found the role of virtual communities and public commitment in weight loss programs.
Virtual communities are like support communities that offer relative anonymity, accessibility, availability, and flexibility in how they represent themselves.
The research was conducted among two weight loss groups, surgical and non-surgical groups. It was found that both the groups benefited from virtual support communities.
The study reported that posting progress on social media is a platform for successful weight loss because users can share photos of before and after weight loss.
Bradford, a co-author of the study said "Through our research we found public commitment, which is a declaration of a position, increases the likelihood of compliance to a course of action and is a key part of a successful weight loss plan".
He also concluded that the exchange of online support facilitates adherence to the offline goal of losing weight. Public accountability is key.
