Pioneering Laser Surgery for Abnormal Heart Beat Performed on Brit Man

A 34-year old man from London became the first person in Britain to be treated by a pioneering surgery that saw doctors treat his abnormal heart beat through a new form of laser surgery known as laser balloon. Scott Rosser had a high risk of stroke after suffering from atrial fibrillation that often caused him to blackout. Doctors at The Heart Hospital in London treated the condition following a pioneering three hour surgery that allowed them to view inside a beating heart through a camera and burn tissue inside the heart.

The doctors used a tube inserted from the leg to the heart and thereby creating a blood free zone for the camera, enclosed in a tiny balloon, to be positioned inside the heart. The doctors then identified the tissue areas that were causing the rouge signals that led to the abnormal beating of the heart and then destroyed those areas using laser.

Speaking to Sky News, consultant cardiologist Dr Oliver Segal said that the new technique will help hundreds of thousands of people suffering from atrial fibrillation. “It’s extremely exciting. It allows us to look inside the heart, a dimension that's never been seen before. And that has to be good for accuracy, good for success and good for safety as well”, he said.
